Article Abstract
The source of hematogenous brain abscess is often unknown.Recently,we have cared for three patients with brain abscess who were found to have hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia(Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome). These three patients were among 36 consecutive brain abscess cases seen at our institution since computerized tomographic(CT)scanning became available in 1975.Pulmonary arteriovenous fistula was documented in two of the three cases and strongly suspected in the third. Our cases are discussed with emphasis upon the importance of recognition of pulmonary arteriovenous fistula and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia in persons with brain abscess.
